The Hokey Pokey

11/22/06

There is a plaque in my guest bathroom that says: “What if the Hokey Pokey is really what it’s all about?”

Now, I do not believe that the Hokey Pokey is really what life is all about. I have that sign there to not only make one giggle, but to provoke thought as well. To challenge ones mind set and perspective about life in general and about life’s particulars.

Some people have read it and found it only humorous. Some people have read it and been offended thinking it was trite. Perhaps they were being a tad self-righteous.(?) A few, though, have realized that tucked deep down inside of their heart was a response to that little plaque that helped them put some things into perspective.

Certainly life is bigger and much more complex and awe-inspiring than the little dance called the Hokey Pokey. But during the awesome journey of life, which is often times filled with heavy burdens, isn’t it miraculous that something as innocent as the Hokey Pokey can relieve that burden and bring us deep joy in the moment, thereby freeing our spirits; lifting us to a place where we can then see past, or around, or even through the burden to recognize and embrace the more glorious and holy things around us in life?

No, the Hokey Pokey is not what life is all about. But life is about participating in those glistening, simple moments so our hearts have an opportunity to soar above the trouble and unite again with the simpler, happier, and perhaps the more spiritual side of life.

Riding can help to strip away all the extraneous garbage of life, leaving one feeling refreshed, energized, at peace, and at one with one's surroundings. It is a marvelous little dance a rider takes with the bike.

Sometimes I dance with my Harp, sometimes my garden, sometimes a book or a meal with friends, the stars, singing……

 What is your favorite dance?
